Everyone in the neighborhood should be able to order from Ocean Fruit — on a phone, a computer, with a screen reader, with the keyboard only, zoomed in, or however you get around the web. We are working to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA on this website and in our app.
We are not finished. We test the site regularly and fix what we find, but some parts don’t work as well as they should yet — we list them below. If anything gets in your way, call us and we’ll take your order ourselves.
Need help placing an order?
Call us at 718-375-4030 and we’ll place the order for you, the same as ordering online. We’re open Sun 8 AM–7 PM · Mon–Tue 7 AM–8 PM · Wed 7 AM–9 PM · Thu 7 AM–10 PM · Fri 7 AM–5 PM · Sat closed.
Prefer to write? Send a WhatsApp message to the same number, 718-375-4030.
Texts sent to the number our order updates come from are answered by a computer, not a person — please call, WhatsApp or email instead.
What we’ve done
A “Skip to main content” link is the first thing the Tab key reaches on every store page.
Buttons and links have names a screen reader can read — including the quantity buttons, which say which item they change.
At checkout, the order type, delivery time, substitution choice, payment method and tip are real choice groups: a screen reader says which one is selected, and the arrow keys move between them.
Form fields have labels, and when something is missing the message is tied to the field and the cursor goes to it.
Sale prices and our text colors were checked against the contrast level WCAG asks for.
The home page slideshow has a pause button, and it starts paused if your device is set to reduce motion. Other animations switch off with that setting too.
The pages we test fit a narrow phone screen and a browser zoomed to 200% without scrolling sideways.
The order tracker announces status changes to screen readers.
Product pages remind you to check the package for allergens and the hechsher, since what we show online can’t replace the label.
We test with automated checks (axe) on phone and desktop sizes and by moving through each page with the keyboard alone.
What we’re still fixing
These are the problems we know about from our last review. We’re working through them.
We haven’t yet gone through every page with VoiceOver on iPhone and TalkBack on Android. Our checks so far are automated tests and keyboard-only testing on a computer.
Card number and security code boxes at checkout come from our payment company, inside their own secure frame. We can’t change how those boxes work, and we haven’t been able to test them fully with a screen reader. If they give you trouble, call us and we’ll take your order.
The map on the order tracker doesn’t mean anything to a screen reader. Your order’s status and delivery time are written out in words above it.
On product lists, each item’s photo and its name are two separate links to the same page, so keyboard users press Tab twice per item.
While a page is still loading, a screen reader doesn’t say so — it hears nothing until the page appears.
The shopping assistant chat hasn’t had a full screen-reader review yet.
Short “added” and “saved” messages that pop up at the bottom of the screen may not always be read out by every screen reader.

A person reads every message. We’ll get back to you within 2 business days, and if we can’t fix it right away we’ll help you get your order another way.
